LAX-Á Angling Club - About us

Angling Club Lax-a is Iceland’s largest sporting outfitter by far, with over 40 salmon rivers/beats exclusively leased. Founded in 1987, Lax-a has been under the same management for nearly 25 years and still retains the same core values as in the beginning; to provide quality, both in terms of fishing as well as other services.

Angling Club Lax-a now offers first class fishing destinations in Russia, Norway, Scotland, Argentina, Canada, Greenland and Mongolia to name a few countries. A few years ago we started to seriously expand our operations into hunting and wing-shooting, and we now offer shooting/hunting programs in Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Africa – in several countries in each continent.

But the heart of our salmon fishing is in Iceland, we have many of the best rivers in the country under our wing and we treat them with care and respect.

Rivers with full service lodges:

West Ranga – A fairly large river (by Icelandic standards), that yields an incredible number of salmon each year. Average catch returns for the past 3 years is around 10.000 salmon per year. The lodge is being rebuilt for the summer of 2011 and will both comfortable and spacious.

East Ranga – Similar to West Ranga, but with some distinct differences. Catch returns per rod in East Ranga are slightly lower than in her sister river, but the average weight in ER is higher than in WR. The East Ranga lodge is highly ranked among our clients, in peaceful surroundings with a good view over the river.

Vididalsa – Located in the north-western part of Iceland, big salmon country, and is widely known as one of the most prestigious rivers in the country. A dream destination for the fly fisherman that seeks gin clear waters with a high percentage of multi winter salmon (often as high as 50%). Salmon over the 20 pound mark are routinely caught here – and then released again. The lodge is cozy and personal, and has served anglers with pride for over 30 years.

Blanda – Another river in the north west of Iceland. Blanda is the earliest salmon river in the country, yielding big and powerful salmon throughout June and July and in staggering numbers. In the past years 4 rods have caught 1800 to 2300 salmon in less than 2 months! It’s a big river with big fish, and lots of them (30 – 50%). The lodge is very recent and very comfortable with large bedrooms, 2 Jacuzzis, a sauna and spacious dining – and sitting rooms.

Rivers with self catering lodges:

Tungufljot – A rather large, gin clear and powerful river in the southern part of Iceland. Four to six rods fish the main salmon beat and have plenty of good pools to choose from. Average catch returns for the past three years is just over 1700 salmon. Rods are booked in pairs, with every pair of rods comes a nice self catering cabin. All cabins have fully functioning kitchens, 2 bedrooms and a hot tub on the deck. Tungufljot is an outstanding option for those who prefer less service and more fishing.

Svarta – Perfect size for the single handed rod! A tributary to Blanda and has the same stock of big salmon. Svarta is fished with 4 rods and is fast flowing for the most part, challenging and rewarding. Access to pools is very good and the surroundings are very beautiful. The lodge is recently renovated, with 5 bedrooms and accommodation for up to 10 persons and is very comfortable.

Laxa in Asum – Often referred to as the Laxa Awesome. A small river with only 2 rods, and an incredibly aggressive stock of salmon. Annual catches can be as high as 1200 salmon in this amazing little gem. Anglers can choose between the little and quaint self catering lodge by the river or the full service Blanda lodge (20 minutes away).

Laugardalsa, Langadalsa and Hvannadalsa – Known by most as “the rivers in the deep”. These three rivers are located in the West fjords of Iceland and are renowned for their beauty. Hvannadalsa and Langadalsa share the same estuary while Laugardalsa is about an hour’s drive from them. These rivers are fished with 2 to 4 rods each and they all have their individual lodges. Trips combining these rivers have been very popular in the past and catch returns are climbing the scale every year.

We also hold a private lease on many other salmon rivers and beats in Iceland; visit this website  for a more details and full list of rivers.

The salmon season in Iceland is relatively short, from June to late September in most rivers – in some rivers the season ends in late October. The prime time in most rivers is from mid-July until mid-August, with some exceptions though.

Even though Iceland is best known for its numerous salmon rivers, the trout & char fishing is attracting more and more attention by international anglers. Fishing for sea trout, sea run arctic char, brown trout and regular arctic char in lakes and rivers has long been a very popular among local anglers. Lax-a now holds a private lease to several trout & char rivers and on our website anglers will definitely find the trout or char fishing they’ve been looking for.
