Ponoi - Brevyeni

Brevyeni General Information

ponoibrevyeni03The Ponoi River has gained worldwide recognition as one of the most productive Salmon Rivers on the planet! Nowhere else can you can find Atlantic Salmon in such abundance.

Now Lax-á is going to launch a new Spring / Summer program on the lower section of the Ponoi -renown for its dramatic, breathtaking and stunning scenery. Our base will be the newly upgraded Brevyeni camp which is located in a deep canyon down stream of the well known Ryabaga water.

The program is most interesting for those who cherish creature comforts as the accommodation is laid out around a fine timber camp. The camp has a communal ‘Big Tent’ for dining and socializing. The sleeping accommodation is in 8 comfortable twin cabins heated by wood burning stoves – single accommodation is thus guaranteed.

Brevyeni guests arrive on saturday departing from Murmansk around 12:00, the flight is approximately two hours and forty minutes and will include one fuel stop. On arrival, guests will have an early dinner so they will have time to fish the home pool. Two guides will be available to help set up rods and tackle and aid guests fishing the home pool.

The bottom of the Lapinyarka beat marks the upper boundary – average 3 kilometres per beat -  Brevyeni camp is exactly 27 kilometres from the sea. Our new beats contain a large number of classic pools as well as rapid sections and exciting glides. This part of the river is easy to read as it is full of features and there is often a fish lying “behind that rock”! Hard core Salmon fishermen will not be disappointed.

The Fishing

ponoibrevyeni20The Brevyeni fishing is perhaps the most varied on the river with two major rapids and one real bottleneck in the beats. Our experiences test fishing in the springs before 2004 proved consistent with our experiences since. Fish are stacked in the Brevyeni water when we start, most often in the upper beats of the 12 kms of water (with more once the rapids have reduced to summer level) but this varies from year to year. As the season progresses the fish spread over the beats more and the added ingredient of the summer run kicks in around mid-June. There is endless wading but good boat fishing too for those less able to wade. The summer run sees the Spring season at Brevyeni out, for it continues all the way through July. Though the camp has been used by private groups of varying sizes and fishing abilities who fish varying hours, we believe that a good average number of fish per rod for a week is about 15 to 25 fish. Many more have been caught and of course less too.

Daily schedule:

The Camp

ponoibrevyeni19The staff are absolutely first class. Guides are half western and half Russian. All Russian guiding staff can speak a good bit of English and the western staff are fluent. The new ‘big tent’ will feature leather furniture, large family style dining area, and a general feeling of comfort. The food will be absolutely first class prepared by one of the top chef’s from Moscow who has been featured in a variety of culinary and men’s magazines. The Lodge will be managed by an experienced English speaking couple who will ensure that even the smallest request is met.

The sleeping accommodation is in 8 comfortable twin cabins heated by wood and electricity stoves – single accommodation is thus guaranteed.

The Big Tent features two stoves, leather couches, oriental rugs, full bar, refrigerator for sodas and beer, small tackle shop, coffee and tea bar, and dining room table capable of seating 10.

Although Brevyeni is a remote outpost lodge, it will boast top quality fishing tackle available for loan (new Sage Z-Axis rods and reels, full Simms demo equipment), a stocked tackle shop, and well equipped boats.

Believe us when we say that the Ponoi is something very special which you definitely won't find on  other Kola rivers.
