In Iceland most rivers open around June 20-July 1st. There are a few exceptions to that rule and one of them is beat one in river Blanda.
Beat one is the lowest beat in the river just a few hundred meters from the river mouth. Blanda beat one opens on June 5th each year and the opening of the river has always given good catch.
In the first two days of the season anglers have caught from 30-99 salmon and all of them big spring fish from 10-22 pounds.
Blanda is a large powerful river and the salmon there have developed to be able to run the strong current and screaming rapids.
Pound for pound i would not hesitate in saying the Blanda salmon is the strongest i have fought in Iceland. The Blanda salmon knows as well how to use the current of the river to its advantage.
The June days in Blanda one are absolutely some of my favorite fishing. You wont catch a whole lot, maybe 1-4 per day but they will all be large ones and each fight will be a memorable one.
