Caribou
In South Greenland, the main trophy, along with Musk Ox, is wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). This species is one of two reindeer/caribou species in Greenland.

Caribou and reindeer are of the same genus and species, Rangifer tarandus, and are differentiated only by sub-species. The feral-reindeer are larger than its indigenous Barren Ground Caribou but aside from that their appearance and habits are similar.

Reindeer, pronounced Tuttu in Greenlandic, are of great importance to the Inuit as a source of meat, but also plays a role in their history, culture, and traditions. They can vary considerably in size, with females weighing up to 90 kg (198 lb) and male bulls 150 kg (331 lb).

Reindeer hunting is a challenging experience involving great personal reward. Hunters can choose from various calibers to hunt Reindeer though the minimum is cal 243 and 270 and similar is preferred.

Helicopter transfers can be arranged from Qaqortoq. We mostly use comfortable heated boats for transfers. This is known to be the highlight of the trip as our guests are inspired by the landscape, nature and wildlife of Greenland.

We use open hunting boats all day long, glassing the hills. Taking land when we find a big trophy bull to stalk it.

The hunting terrain is relatively comfortable with smaller hills and hard ground, flat rocks that makes walking pleasant.

The hunting trip is one week, Tuesday – Tuesday, that is seven nights in Camp, 6 full hunting days. Flying directly from Keflavik, Iceland to Qaqartoq, Greenland. From there it’s a about two hours to Lax-a camp.

Many of the highest SCI Record book scores for Caribou come from South-Greenland.

We offer combo hunts for Caribou and Musk ox during the month of August.

Once you have finished your hunt there are so many things to do. We have seven pristine sea run arctic char rivers where you can fish whenever you want. All tackle is available in camp. Together with the river fishing you can also go saltwater fishing for various species of fish. You can walk up artic hares and ptarmigan on the hills. This is very season depending, sometimes they are there and sometimes not. Seal hunting can also be arranged together with the local guides.

The picture above is so typical for our hunting terrain.

In the summer of 2012, Lax-á erected the first proper hunting- and fishing camp on the Southwest Coast of Greenland. The camp was and still is the first ever permanent hunting-and fishing camp in Greenland.

A total of twelve sleeping cabins (twin bed) built around a dining lodge with plenty of room for bigger groups.Booking are based on shared cabins, there is a single cabin supplement.

Meals are prepared by the camp chef – most of the menu originates in area (caribou, musk ox, lamb, arctic char and fish from the sea).

The camp has running water, WC, showers, sauna, and a fully equipped kitchen. All this and still a wilderness camp – equates to a really unique experience.

The Lax-á camp is located on the coast of Southwest Greenland which is the most accessible and most traveled to point in Greenland.

There is no better place on the planet to be connected with nature than Greenland.
